What to expect

Our sedation options are all administered by highly trained, qualified staff. Rest assured, you’ll be in safe hands here at Halswell Dental. We will recommend different methods of sedation depending on your situation.

Inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide)

Also known as “happy gas”, nitrous oxide is a safe way to ease dental anxiety in both children and adults. You simply breathe in the gas through a small nosepiece during your appointment. You’ll feel calm and relaxed throughout the treatment, and the effects wear off quickly afterwards so you will be able to drive yourself home.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a sedative, prescribed by your dentist and supervised in the clinic. The medication we use is called “midazolam”, which puts you in a dreamy state. You’ll remain awake, but feel much more at ease throughout the procedure. This can be a preferrable choice for those who aren’t comfortable with nitrous oxide. A support person must accompany you and take you home afterwards.

IV sedation

For those with higher anxiety or longer treatments, IV sedation may be an option. This is administered by our specially trained team and provides a deeper level of relaxation. You’ll be conscious, but very relaxed, and may not remember much of the procedure. A support person must accompany you and take you home afterwards.
